What is R-454B?

R-454B is a low-GWP A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant, sold commercially as Opteon XL41 by Chemours and Puron Advance by Carrier. With a global warming potential (GWP) of about 467 - roughly 78% lower than R-410A (GWP 2,088) - R-454B is now the default refrigerant in new U.S. residential and light-commercial split air conditioners and heat pumps, adopted by Carrier, Trane, and Lennox to meet the EPA's AIM Act HFC phasedown.

FAQ: R-454B Refrigerant

Q: Is R-454B a drop-in replacement for R-410A?

A: No. R-454B is not a drop-in replacement for R-410A. A2L systems need different lubricants, component ratings, and safety sensors. Retrofitting an R-410A system is generally not EPA-compliant and voids warranties.

Q: What equipment uses R-454B in 2026?

A: New U.S. residential split-system AC units and heat pumps from Carrier, Trane, and Lennox use R-454B, along with many light-commercial systems.

Q: Does R-454B require special training to handle?

A: Yes. Technicians need EPA 608 certification with an A2L endorsement, dedicated A2L recovery machines and cylinders, and A2L leak detectors. R-454B is mildly flammable.

Q: Is R-454B the same as R-32?

A: No. R-454B (GWP ~467) is used by Carrier, Trane, and Lennox; R-32 (GWP ~675) is used by Daikin and many ductless systems. They are different, non-interchangeable A2L refrigerants.

Q: Will R-454B prices come down?

A: As R-454B production scales and additional A2L manufacturers enter the market, prices are expected to decline moderately from the current "new refrigerant premium" over the next few years.
